Local Scout Leader Earns American Legion Square Knot Award
Tonie Jones, Scoutmaster of Troop 21 in the Pony Express Council and member of American Legion Pony Express Post 359 in Saint Joseph, Missouri, has been awarded The American Legion Square Knot Award.
The American Legion Square Knot Award is part of the Community Organizations Awards from the Boy Scouts of America. This is an honor award for outstanding service. The American Legion Square Knot is designed to recognize American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion members who are actively involved in the Scouting program. This award is not meant to be a selective or limited award, but one that is available to any American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary or Sons of The American Legion member who completes the
requirements for the award.
The award is meant to recognize dedication and work required by an American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary or Sons of The American Legion member to assist in furthering the Scouting program in The American Legion. The award consists of a gold and purple square knot, which may be worn on the Scout uniform, certificate and congratulatory letter from the national commander of The American Legion.
The requirements for the award include:
- Service as a registered member of Scouting and the Legion Family
- Completion of training from the BSA
- At least three consecutive years in a Scouting leadership position
- Performance of service.
After completing requirements, written endorsements from designated officials are required
before final approval from the National Americanism Commission for the award. This award shows a very high level of dedication and commitment to Scouting and requires no small measure of time or expense.
Scoutmaster Jones received his award at the recent Spring Conference of The American Legion Department of Missouri in Jefferson City, Missouri on February 19, 2017.
